Award winning designer Anthony Rodier strikes out on his own

After working in the Industry for the last 5 years and leading the design of products for FCS and Gorilla Grip (Surf Hardware International) Anthony is now offering his design services to the greater surfing industry.

Here is a clip from Sydney Morning Herald, Weekend Edition, 23-24th April 2005 which talks about Anthony's design and how it scored first place at the 2005 Australian Design Awards. An interesting read on how a really good design can even beat a better Mouse Trap.

The 2006 Spring Classic

The organisation of the 2006 Spring Classic by the Southside Malibu Club's Event Organiser, Peter Japp, was second to none. For some reason he could not organise the weather. It was a shocker - see below for some pics. A CD with shots from the day is available from John Giles or Adam Albertini at the Surf CDs web site.

The 40th anniversary of the British Surfing Association in Cornwall

The Oxbow sponsored British Surfing Museum is taking part in a major exhibition to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the British Surfing Association in Cornwall this Autumn – it’s open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm, starting October 11th and ending November 3rd in the first floor gallery at The Old Sunday School, St Ives TR26 1RP.

To celebrate its 40th year, the British Surfing Association is translating the power and magic of the ocean to canvas in a gallery, which captures the soul of British surfing over the past 40 years through 40 iconic photographs.

Photography plays a crucial role in surfing, with the most memorable images being the ones that capture the raw moments, showcasing why it is we love the sport so much. In its first ever gallery, the BSA has drawn on the talents of surf and photography legends including, Doug Wilson, Alex Williams and Paul Gill to ensure an exhibition of unique and inspiring images that capture the imagination and record an iconic moment in the rich and diverse British surf culture from 1966 – 2006.

The Surfing Museum has provided key images for the show and five historic surfboards, one from each of the decades from 1960s flower power to the latest Eco board created by the Eden Project.

The gallery was launched in Covent Garden in London in September, it is then going on display at the BSA’s official 40 th birthday party in Newquay where specially invited guests will celebrate their contributions to surfing – it’s then opening in St Ives in October and November.

All 40 images will be auctioned off, using a silent bid process throughout both events, with money raised going towards supporting the GB surf team.

Surf the World board game

Looking for something to do these holidays? Well, why not get your arms around this fun game? What a great idea! (Ed)

SURF THE WORLD

Need a gift for the surfer in your life?  Surf the World Enterprises has the perfect solution: a unique surfing board game created in Australia.  Surf the World has been designed by a surfer for surfers and is a perfect gift item for surfers of all ages.

The game features classic line-up photos of well-known breaks at Bells, Raglan, G-Land, Santa Catalina, Rincon, Mundaka and J-Bay by Steve Ryan, Joli, Corey Scott and Steve Bissell.

The aim of the game is to collect a ‘Wave Card’ from each of these spots.  Each card describes the break, conditions, local set-up, etc.  And of course, along the way around the board (and the world) there are classic surfing encounters with locals, dolphins, sharks, broken boards, shallow reefs, wipe outs…

There’s luck, strategy and cunning involved.  Not to mention the opportunity to test surfing knowledge via 150 surfing trivia questions which range from the very simple to the totally esoteric.  For example: What is another name for the West Australian spot known as the Camp of the Moon?

Tim Brady, game inventor, is an ex-Californian who grew up surfing the Hollister Ranch and much of the world in the 70s, 80s and 90s.  He now lives in Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia.  He says the game has become an instant favourite with his age group, both as a family game and as a collector’s item.  It also rates highly on the ‘filthy’ scale with grommets.

Besides Australia, Surf the World is also available in the UK and the USA.

It is a perfect gift item and will be available widely in surf stores and toy stores over the coming year.
