North shore legend Tom Stone visits England

North shore legend Tom Stone is visiting England for a two week surf festival in the region where Captain James Cook was born and raised.

He's travelling to the great explorer's heartland to present a series of talks on Hawaiian culture and the significance of surfing in the history of the Islands. During his stay he'll be hand shaping a replica of an ancient Olo, like that of Hawaiian chief Abner Paki who's original board is on display at an exhibition of British surfing history.

Stone is also making a holua sled, and will give riding demonstrations on replicas of ancient finless planks on the beach and reef breaks around Saltburn, England. The festival runs from March 25 - April 8 and has been organised by the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum at Marton which is hosting the event, and the British Surfing Museum.

"To have a Hawaiian legend come to Cook's birthplace and feel the aloha from the surfers in the north east of England is going to be an amazing experience," said Pete Robinson of The Surfing Museum. "I'm honoured Tom has agreed to come over and share is knowledge and love for surfing and it's history and how it helped shape Hawaiian culture and spread all over the world."

The Surfing Museum's exhibition of British surfing history continues at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum until June 6th - including the world's oldest surfboard on loan from the Bishop Museum. Pete Robinson will also be giving demonstrations on vintage British surfboards and a talk on UK surf history.

Surfers wanted for TV/Film roles

Sports marketing and management business Vantage Management is breaking new ground by creating the world's first film and television agency for just surfers. Vantage Surf Faces is creating an extensive database of Australian surfers and 'beachy' types who will be available to appear in films, television shows, T.V. commercials and photoshoots. VSF's is seeking interested surfers from all around Australia who are keen to get a break into the tricky world of film and television.

Vantage Management has worked as an agent for T.V. and film since 1998. Their role has been to find sportspeople for extras, stunt and major roles in professional productions. A large percentage of the talent that has been requested has been surfers, it is this demand that has lead to the creation of an exclusive agency for surfers. Run in a similar way to an acting or modelling agency Vantage Surf Faces is only interested in recruiting surfers for their catalogue. "By no means are we looking for just young beautiful people" Shan Railton explains. "We understand that producers are looking for all types of looks and ages.

In the past we have been asked for surfers as young as 5 years old as well as older crew, up to 60 plus". "Our aim is to create a one stop shop of surfers for T.V. and film."  Diversity is going to be the only rule for recruiting surfers. VSF is looking for anyone who surfs regularly on any sort of surf craft and is interested in trying their luck in front of a camera. Surfers of any ability, either sex, any look and all ages are invited to join VSF.

In the recent past Vantage Management has sourced talent for some major productions. Some more well known commercials VM has recruited for include "The All New Toyota Hilux", "Johnny Walker Rugby", "Panadol Surfers" and "Busch Beer (USA)" as well as a string of extras for major TV and film productions. This credibility and experience will be behind the new Vantage Surf Faces agency. It is anticipated that VSF will be one of the most popular agencies in Australia when it come to looking for beach image talent.

It is important that VSF finds talent from all over Australia as there are productions taking place in most major centres. VSF would like to think that we will have surfing talent ready to go no matter where a production is being shot. Being Australia wide will also ensure that all possible talent will be uncovered, not just people from the big cities. In the modern day world of communication and transport there is no reason that a person in Torquay can't be called for a photoshoot on the Gold Coast as long as the production company is prepared to get them there (which is usually the case!).

Travel is not the only perk for those who get parts in productions, the pay is pretty decent too. A minimum fee of $500 per day is standard and in most cases fees reach the thousands of dollars for a couple of days work. The largest payout we have had so far was for a surfer who was paid $20 000 for a five day shoot in Fiji, not only did he surf perfect waves with no one out, the production company also flew him first class and put him up in 5 star accommodation! Tough work, VSF can help you get it!

Vantage Management is inviting interested surfers who are keen to be in the Vantage Surf Faces catalogue to get in touch either via the Vantage Management website or by giving our office a call on 02 9913 9596.

LA RIPPEHR

EH Kiteboarding team develops new more powerful designs for kites continuously, new methods of production with the purpose of improving the quality, and new materials that promise to be safe and lasting. This allows them to continue being competitive in relation to the other great marks in the market. EH Kites are conceived in Cabarete, where the wind appears more than 250 days over the year, and the experience of EH in the industry, allows them to produce kites that surpasses the will of its clients.

Particularitity of the RIPPEHR:
Here there are the second generation of flat wing that will know to satisfy simultaneously to nascent as well as advanced riders. The characteristics that maintain this family of wings well well-known, is the very important Leading Edge/LE (100% of Of-power), therefore a superior wind range over the classic wings, a passive security that consists of releasing the bar so that the wing stands surely on the water and without power, and a very easy relaunching water.

All this combined with impressive results. The pressure in the bar has become smoother thanks to his shorter LE. Thanks to their maneuverability, will be powerful as much in the waves as for freestyle. It does not matters at the speed you go because you will keep always the control.

EH EUROPE Opinion about the RIPPEHR

In our trip to Cabarete, we sailed as much with the RIPPEHR in the waves as in the choppy, sometimes with a very irregular wind.

Two words to summarize this kite: simple, comfortable, without forgetting the result. It is completely different from the classic C-kite and is absolutely essential to sail with it for many hours to be accustomed and to remove the 100% of its possibilities. I am sure that it is going to please to all kind of rider.

Positive points:

  • The position of kite in the window, goes really  far in the window edge, which makes easy go up in the wind, it is like a game for childrens. It is necessary to take its references in the jumps, since the sensations are quite different and the technique also.
  • The manageability of kite, the RIPPEHR turns mainly on its ear, is not necessary to be scared to do kiteloop. It is not necessary to have more of 14m, since it is very easy to move it to generate wind.
  • The pressure in the bar, is impressive, the first impression is that its handling is easy and that it is possible to be controlled with 2 fingers. It is very smooth. All the people who have bad the arms or the back will be able to appreciate it to their right value. You do not need so much strength to make it return to his position or to retake the power.
  • The stability, twice more stable than bow of the first generation, since its point of power is placed more near the leading edge. The irregular winds do not suppose a problem, kite absorbs the unexpected pulls without having to make suffer the egs, as it happens in kite classic.
  • The Leading Edge/LE (or management of power), has D-power line of 40cm, a minimum to obtain a good management of power: Pull the Bar, the RIPPEHR rides, let out the bar, the RIPPEHR stops, always in smoothness, is like that a great simplicity. Safer and  needer. The Strap have 40cm, is necessary then, to use it with the purpose of having an optimal adjustment correctly. The Rider chooses if it wants smoothness in his navigation or, on the contrary, a little aggressiveness and great power. But  the important thing is that it does not matter how is regulated because the power always is under control.
  • The water Relaunching, is enough with throwing enough one of its out lines, so that, it rises completely single, its echnique is in the reach of the whole riders.
  • The bar, is simple, but it has everything what is necessary, and an innovating system of swibel C-Loop, which always avoids the crossover of the lines  when making a rotations during navigation.

Negative points:

  • Precise, during the relaunching, due to its system of bridles and the flat length, could make a small turn movements in the water.
  • In order to solve  it is necessary to pull the out line smoothly and single, it puts itself On guard of relaunching In order to jump, as it has already said, it is necessary to take new references. Its speed of turn is higher to the classic Kite, reason because we possibly arrive late when recalling the kite at the Zénit position during the jump. The RIPPEHR does not need to be impelled along the opposite side of the window  to take off. It is enough taking it barely to the one o'clock and throwing downwards the bar. We will experience a power of elevation outside of the normal thing. It is why she is so effective for the initiation in the schools. The student does not need to move kite and to experience the typical pulling that removes from the water loosing the control of the kite. The RIPPEHR is thought for all riders but, specially, to the advanced and intermediate ones.
  • The most important difference with C-Kite is its LE, for that reason it can become dangerous using this Kite outside of its wind range. It is always recommended to have a minimum of two Rippehrs to cover all ranges of wind. It is important to advise the people who begin with this kind of Kite testing as well C-kites later... are not the same thing!

Technology:

The weave is pre-stretch with the purpose of compensating a possible deformation of the material, and allows that kite always maintains a stable profile for a long time. The trailing edge was reinforced with the purpose of preventing a premature wear and tear in the material. It has a type of valve with stopper ball with the purpose of not letting leave the air, as well as one of great dimension to deflating fast and easyly.

EH construction:

  • 50g  polyester spi
  • 175g Dacron on the leading edge and the Battens
  • 100 mm Bladders
  • 175g in the connection point
  • All the Floaters are inflated during one night for a control of the welds

CODYVASSALLO Training Fins

The CODYVASSALLO training fins introduce a new design principle that reduces the strain on the ankle and knee.

Conventional fins place the majority of the force on the toes and beyond, levering the load on the ankles. Pressure is reduced on the ankle by moving the widest portion of the blade towards the ankle and directly over the centre of the foot.

The top surface provides better water flow allowing free movement for the swimmer to train with their natural kicking motion. This unique design creates water displacement that maintains the load on the legs and alleviates pressure on the ankles.

Surfers:

Our updated range of fins now encompasses the entire product set and provides a complete solution to our customers and partners.

Our Standard Composite range has been considerably extended and which now also includes a number of 80/20 inside foil options. The inside convex foil is designed to provide not only more speed but, beneficially, more hold and drive through carving turns as well as more fluid rail-to-rail transitions.

Kitesurfers:

This follows on the back of our targeted penetration into the kite board market. The feed back from our kitesurfers has been very encouraging. The system is allowing the board riders to pull off more “Rad” maneuvers in the pocket by providing better hold and turn ability than other systems. In a word “insane” is how Pete Peterson describes the system.
