We recently made a very special retro board of limited appeal to older surfers who are collectors of high quality craftsmanship.  It is the Gary Burden Classic 9'8'' stringerless and we put our "Tsunami" silk art on it. This model is a classic because it was the final evolution of longboard design in Australia immediately before boards went short and it's "slingshot" feature of flexing board and fin in bottom turns was forgotten in the rush to adapt shapes to the shorter boards.

I am looking for people who might be interested in this board, it has stayed true to the construction of the period and is AU$1,550 with the Tsunami artwork on it at Byron Bay, shipping is extra. The other artworks in our range are AU$220 less on this board.

The marketing angle of In Depth Creations Surfboards is that they are functional art, designed to be ridden and then put back up on the living room wall after a surf instead being left in a bag or in the garage.

Interested collectors should drop a line to Brian at www.indepthcreations.com.au with their details.

Industry support needed to save the break at Bastion Point, Victoria, Australia

Destroy an iconic Victorian surf break just to build a boat ramp?
Surfrider Foundation and the Mallacoota surfing community have called on East Gippsland Shire Council to reject a proposal for the development of a boat ramp at Bastion Point, Mallacoota, on environmental, economic and public safety grounds.

The proposal will destroy the excellent wave at Bastion Point, and includes the construction a groyne 130m long straight through the break. An Environmental Effects Statement is currently being prepared for submission to the Victorian government.

The importance of Bastion Point
The right-hander known as “Broken Board” at Bastion Point is recognised around the world and is used regularly by more than 60 local surfers and many hundreds more who visit each year. The reef and associated sand banks are located in an increasingly rare unmodified estuary mouth environment. Surfers have been using the area as a primary surfing location for well over 40
years.

Bastion Point is unique in that it is one of a handful of consistent surf-breaks on Victoria's Gippsland coast, and one of Victoria’s few waves that are sheltered in the frequent southerly winds experienced along Australia’s southern coast. It provides a safe environment with a variety of surfable waves that cater for beginners through to expert surfers that will be lost if the proposed
development goes ahead. A monstrous and unnecessary groyne straight through the break will completely alter sand movement and threaten surfer safety.

Impact on industry
Mallacoota supports two surfing shops and a strong local and tourist surfing community. No studies on fishing effort have been undertaken to justify the development of a boat ramp as being more important than surfing. Information gathered locally and supported by Surfrider Foundation indicates that annual average expenditure by surfers in this region is higher than that of recreational fishers. We believe the surfing industry has much more to lose if this wave is lost than the fishermen will gain.

How you can help save this wave
The support of the surf industry is critical to the success of saving Broken Board. Local surfers are shaping a surfboard to be presented to the Victorian Government on the steps of Parliament House to protest this development. The board will have surfers’ signatures on the deck and industry logos on the bottom as a show of support.

Getting behind this campaign is easy - simply send one of your decals (max. 6 inches for insertion under the glass job) urgently to:
Gary Proctor, PO Box 444 Mallacoota Vic 3893.

For more information:
Surfrider’s submissions on this proposal are available for download at www.surfrider.org.au.
Or call Neil Lazarow (Surfrider Foundation) 0416 022 742
Gary Proctor (Mallacoota Surfriders) 0427 580 556
We cannot afford to lose precious waves. Any support you can give is greatly appreciated.

For Check out the Surfrider website if you want more info on our activities to date. At this stage, all we are asking is for decals to use on our surfboard petition. Please let me know if you are able to help out in any other way (eg writing letters, distributing the flyer within industry and to the surfing community etc).

Shane Dorian's wave at Tahiti

Here is a link to some pics and an interview with Shane about his experience with a killer wave at Tahiti in September this year.

Note: if you only have dial up it will be very slow to load each picture as the sound file (Shane describing what went through his mind at that point) comes with it.

Pretty awesome stuff. A real legend!

The Alfred Shaheen Retrospective---November 19 at Cruz Island+Beach 3

The Alfred Shaheen Retrospective is a nonprofit show which will be included in the Cruz Island+Beach 3 Surf; Skate & Hawaiiana Expo produced by Cruz Nobleza and held on " Saturday, November 19, 2005, between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.

The location of the show is the Aviation Park Gymnasium, 1935 Manhattan Beach Boulevard, Redondo Beach, California. The retrospective is for one-day only and will show vintage aloha shirts, dresses, textiles and vintage photos of Shaheen's factory and his unique printing process. The exhibited items are from the private collections of Camille Shaheen-Tunberg and Theodore Theodosus Gonzales.

This exhibit is of a historical nature and we are pleased that Mr. Shaheen will be on hand this day to answer any of your questions. The display mannequins for this retrospective are being generously donated for use by Patina-V, City of Industry, California.

Alfred Shaheen was the most creative and prolific of all of the Hawaiian manufacturers in the heyday of ‘50s and ‘60s fashion.  Shaheen’s textile designs and fabrics are legendary and were inspired by Hawaii, the South Pacific and Asia.  During pre-statehood Hawaii – a critical time in Hawaii’s economic development – Alfred Shaheen built the most comprehensive textile printing, garment manufacturing and retail company Hawaii would ever see.

Stretching beyond the limits imposed on him by the isolation of the Hawaiian Islands, Shaheen literally pioneered Hawaii’s vital garment manufacturing industry by engineering and building his own textile printing machinery, developing innovative textile printing techniques and revolutionary dyes, and by combining all facets of garment creation under one roof in his own production facility.  Shaheen’s vision, inventiveness, engineering brilliance and unreserved commitment to authenticity and excellence earned him Hawaii's Lifetime Achievement Award in July of 2001.

New Helmet Launched That Allows Water-Skiers Instant Instruction From Coach To Athlete

Tuncurry, Australia, September 2005 . A new coaching system ‘HEADZONE’ enables water-skiers to hear their coach at the precise moment they need instruction. This unique helmet helps accelerate the learning process by enabling instant communication from coach to athlete. The Coaching System, designed by Mark Ellis a Professional Water-ski Coach and inventor, and produced by HEADZONE, is specifically designed for water sports, and is 100% waterproof.

Communication is the key to learning quickly and correctly, especially when it comes to action sports where good timing and technique is essential. The fully waterproof range of HEADZONE helmets can help achieve better results faster by offering instant communication from the coach to athlete.

The HEADZONE Helmet eliminates stop and start coaching allowing efficient use of time, and thus more students can be coached per hour. In addition to being waterproof the helmets other key features are built-in speakers, basic unit has 16 channels, custom channel selections available upon request, and a range of up to 3km.

Mark Ellis, Professional Water-ski Coach and designer of HEADZONE comments: ‘As a coach it is important to be able to relay knowledge clearly without any misunderstanding to the student or athlete to achieve the highest results while increasing their ability. My goal has been to do this and at the same time protect my student’s safety.

To coach people on when to ‘think tough’, when to change their body position, how to react, and ‘feel the rhythm’. If I could guide them and instruct them instantly they would change and experience improvement like never before. I wanted to give instruction and have it turn to action, without confusion or thinking. The coaching then becomes their own thoughts on how, when, and where to be strong or smooth. I would be able to coach every step of the way. When you're in the zone, you're at your best. ’

New Round Box launched by 4WayFinSystems

After much research and development we're very excited to be launching our new round box designed for over-the-glass installations. Manufacturers now have the choice of using either the existing oval or new round box for their over-the-glass installations, depending on their personal preferences.

The box will be available over the coming months. The detailed design process has also ensured that all installation jigs remained unchanged and the installation procedures remain very similar - our website will be hosting the expanded installation instructions - see our 'Installation Guide' section for more on this.

Using the new round box compared to the existing oval design has many advantages, including the following:

  1. Comparatively lighter in weight,
  2. Faster and easier to install,
  3. Visibly more appealing, particularly on shorter boards,
  4. Added strength due to improved recesses and a longer cylindrical shaft (although the box remains exactly the same depth as the current oval shaped box),
  5. Can be used more extensively with channel bottom's.

Note that, as usual, care must always be taken when inserting the desired fins particularly as the extended oval platform is no longer present.

We're also hard at work developing our under-the-glass installation to provide further choice to all manufacturers - watch this space for more news on this exiting development in the very near future.

New Foils Released:  It's time to fly! F16 and F22

If you're wanting SPEED as well as "HOLD" then the F16 gives you everything to make you "Fly!"

The uniquely wing shaped F16 fin gives the hold, whilst the double-sided foil allows for smooth rail to rail transition. The inside concave gives the acceleration, best suited for hollow & "bowly" waves. For smaller & weaker waves replace the centre fin with one of our regular foils such as the 4A.

The larger version of the F16 is the F22 with the same shape and performance dynamic but for surfers who weigh more or find the F16 too "loose".
