IT'S ON AGAIN! - 2005 MAGOO CHARITY LONGBOARD CLASSIC – 30 April & 1 May 2005. Each year around April-May, the Central Coast Malibu Boardriders Club hold a charity event called ‘The Magoo Charity Classic’ in honour of our own living legend Barry ‘Magoo’ McGuigan. The event is a Longboard Surfing Contest held at Soldiers Beach on the NSW Central Coast (Magoo's home beach), but we also have an associated Charity Raffle, Charity Auction and Charity Head Shave. ‘Magoo’ is 76 this May, and is still and active club member, and regularly competes in State and National Titles and other surfing contests around Australia. Magoo is a top bloke and a real inspiration to all that know him. The Club is honoured to have Magoo as a member and to hold this event in his honour, and he is really proud that we do it. Seeing him glow each year makes all the effort worth while. Since the event’s inception in 1999 (it was a surprise for Magoo's 70th Birthday), we have raised over $100,000 for charity. At the request of Magoo, ALL money raised from the event goes to Central Coast Health Cancer Research and Cancer Care. Last year (2004) we had over 100 competitors from the Eastern States contest 11 divisions in the Longboard competition, and combined with the raffle, auction and head shave, we were able to raise over $14,000 -- all of which was donated to cancer care and research. The event has developed into a great weekend of Longboard surfing and good fun, and the event has a great 'grass roots' feel about it. We believe that The Magoo Charity Classic is the premier longboarding charity event in Australia. It is a great opportunity for the surfing community and non surfing related businesses, to support such a great event and raise money for charity.
