Ningaloo Reef needs your help again

The
Ningaloo
is a coral reef
and limestone cape
of astonishing biodiversity
on the west coast of Australia.

The SAVE NINGALOO CAMPAIGN is
the focus of community conservation
efforts to protect this special place.

With the support of tens of thousands
of people from around the world
the campaign stopped a large
marina resort from being
built in 2003.

The Campaign now strives to see
these ecological values maintained
while allowing for sustainable levels
of human visitation to the region.

NEWSFLASH
WA Govt. increases Ningaloo Sanctuary Protection from 10 to 34%

Ningaloo Reef - loved to death?
Coral, Ningaloo Reef, WA Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia

Last year many Gumby Lock readers helped rescue Ningaloo Reef from a massive marina-resort.

We're contacting you again to let you know that the reef is still in serious danger, and needs your help.

You now have the opportunity to increase the overall size of the Ningaloo Marine Park and secure more protected areas within it and help keep the Reef in its natural state.

Through our quick and easy automated letter, please contact the Premier of Western Australia to let him know that you want his government to:

  • increase areas of full protection [sanctuary zones] across the whole park to between 30 and 50% of its area, and,
  • follow through on its commitment to extend the Ningaloo Marine Park to the north and the south to encompass the whole reef.

We need you to let the Western Australian Premier, Dr Gallop, know that you support these increases, and expect a strong and precautionary approach to the management of Ningaloo Reef in the future. These changes can be adopted in the new Ningaloo Reef Management Plan, which is currently in review. Your automated letter is a submission to this review.

Our choices now, and your action in the next few minutes, will determine whether our children inherit a healthy Ningaloo Reef. Thank you for taking action at this important time.

"The worldwide decline in coral reefs calls for an urgent reassessment of current management practices … the rate of establishment and size of No Take Areas [sanctuary zones]a; needs to be hugely increased."
Nature (Journal) - June 2004

Most people I speak to feel the same way when it comes to the ocean, that we are the custodians of a finite resource, not heirs to an endless entitlement without responsibility.

The call for precaution in the way we manage Ningaloo Reef is the ultimate No Brainer! If the scientists say 30-50% in sanctuary, then that is what we must have.

Summer Lines - a letter from South Africa
Summer lines by Roger Smith at www.dawnpatrol.co.za

When spring comes to an end at the south eastern tip of Africa, the swell doesn’t stop coming. Whereas in winter swell tends to come from the southwest, with the onset of summer, swell lines tend to come more from the south and east. This change means that they hit our coast more directly.

Warm water and clean summer lines!

Summer waves are not as intense, but the lines are still there. Our swell producing engine in the Roaring Forties works throughout the summer holiday, with the assistance of it’s cousins to the east in the southern Indian Ocean, the tropical cyclones.

Misty warm morning lines, and empty lineups.

In November, the sun beats down, and the water is warm. Cold fronts are not cold, and their scouts, the coastal lows bring warm south westerly offshores. The onshores are gentle and lazy, tending to wake up late, and rather speed the waves up by making the lips crumble a little.

Summer lines are good enough for me.

Light offshore, bit of swell, say no more!

Do you see yourself in there - going for it?

So many waves, so little time!  (Notice the uncrowded waves? Ed.)

Roger is a surf guide with Dawnpatrol, a surf tour operator based in East London on South Africa’s south east coast.  They and their support team move up and down the coast, surfing the best waves on offer between Jeffrey’s Bay and the Kwa-Zulu Natal South Coast. Waves of Warning

"Waves of Warning" is surfing's first epic novel.  Written in the style of a James Michener saga combined with the action adventure of 'The Perfect Storm', the book is about the dangers of modern man losing touch with the timeless ocean.  At over 800 pages, the book's attention to character, detail and plot maintains an authenticity about modern surfing that few authors other than Glenn Hening have ever acheived.  Or as Drew Kampion says in his foreword, "I doubt that anyone else in the surfing world could accomplish what he has in these pages."  (See the author bio below and go to Review section to read the Foreword in its entirety.)

'Waves of Warning" is divided into two volumes.  Part One, "The First Winds of Winter" and Part Two, "Ancient Waves" combine to weave a grand story that begins with a lone mariner at a sacred Polynesian reef and continues through the heart of the surf industry in Orange County, the pro surf scene on the North Shore, the billion dollar deals on Wall Street, massive storms in Antarctica, the endless waves of the Roaring 40s, tow-in surfing on 80' waves, and an archipelago not found on any maps where a society of people have lived for hundred of years untouched by modern technology.

The second print run of 500 copies (perfect bound with new, striking duotone covers) came back from the printer, and so far I’ve done three book signings and seventeen surf shops are now carrying surfing’s first epic novel. The price went down to US$34.95

Go check out the web site, www.wavesofwarning.com to read excerpts, reviews and information on how to order.
