The 4th Surfing Arts, Science and Issues Conference |
|
The Groundswell Society Presents

.
The 4th Surfing Arts, Science and Issues Conference
Ventura, California
Conference Saturday November 6, 2004 at the Holiday Inn
Surfing Sunday November 7, 2004 in the water at Surfers Point
Theme: “ Riding With Grace/Family First”
In an increasingly fragmented surfing community, there are two constants that will never go away:
Riding a wave with grace instead of aggression
-
sharing a positive legacy with new generations of surfers.
For some, a ‘laid back’ attitude may be out of step with the latest versions of high performance surfing, but there is no denying that more surfers are riding simply for the fun of it than ever before, At the same time, with more women and children in the water than ever before, along with yesterday’s hot surfers now becoming parents, and even grandparents, there are now three generations actively riding waves every chance they get.
To celebrate and highlight these positive changes in modern surfing, the theme for SASIC 4 is “Riding With Grace/Family First”.
SASIC 4 is for those surfers interested in seeing surfing in a new and positive light that they can absorb and take back to their surf club, company, favourite surf spot, not to mention to their homes and communities.
Saturday conference will include presentations from:
- Jesse Billauer,
- Steve Pezman,
- Karl Pope,
- Ian Cairns,
- Mary Setterholm,
- Tom Linker, and
- Gunther Swoboda.
The Sunday surf session will include:
- Surfing-As-Dance Exhibition,
- a Kids-Moms-Dads Free Surfing Hour,
- and the First Ultra-Style Expression Session
As Longboard Magazine said, “The Groundswell Society’s idealism could be surfing’s new voice of conscience.” SASIC 4 will be your chance to hear that voice, add to it, and be a part of a refreshing morning of surfing.
The registration fee for the conference is $50, $25 for students. Under 16/over 65 get in free. Make checks payable to "The Groundswell Society" and send to 233 Ashland Ave., Ste. F Santa Monica, CA 90405.
The Sunday session in limited to the first 20 tandem teams and the first 20 surf stylists. The Family Free Surfing hour is open to everyone, especially kids and moms who don’t get to surf C-street because of the crowds. We will have a permit to run the event, and we will be making every effort to establish an atmosphere in the water of fun and sharing.
Hotel rooms are available for $109 single/double per night for Friday and Saturday. Call the Holiday Inn.
Conference attendees will get a free t-shirt.

Update on the Taranaki Triple 7 Surf Event |
|
What is the Taranaki based - (New Zealand) ‘ASP SUPER SERIES’ event all about you ask?
To be the FIRST event in the world, working under the new ASP mid-rankings strata concept of an event format, initially termed the ‘ASP SUPER SERIES’. The inaugural 2005 trial event brings together the world's top 45 from the WCT plus the highest ranked 65 WQS with a number of local wildcards and successful trialists into a limited invitation 144-man event.
What are the organiser's aims for the event?
Supported by the New Plymouth/Taranaki local councils and hosted by the local Maori culture it will be a joint celebration and international expose of their people, customs, history, language and spirit. A co-operative embrace of both Maori and surfing cultures presenting surfing and surfers, in essence the only global tribe, as being supportive and understanding of indigenous cultures around the world.
To present surfing as the ultimate pursuit of healthy vibrant people, young in mind and spirit who are mentally physically and spiritually in-tune and mature and living an environmentally existence in tune with Mother Nature riding nature's energy.
Where and When bro?
TARANAKI / New Plymouth - New Zealand.
The event will be mobile throughout the myriad of surfing locations along the Taranaki coastline, presented within a waiting period of seven days from February 7th thru 14th, 2005.
What's happening with preparations?
The Coordinator of the inaugural super series event in Taranaki, Paul Sargeant, is currently on the ASP WCT tour in his capacity as a photo-journalist and assistant secretary of the WPS [World Professional Surfers], the athletes’ representative and policy association. He has reported that the pro surfers are extremely enthusiastic about initiating and contesting the new event and series format in Taranaki.
Sarge is doing his utmost to ensure the complete involvement and commitment of the world’s WCT surfers (top 45) in supporting and contesting the NZ event. His close involvement and personal friendship with the world’s top 45 surfers should all but guarantee that carte blanche commitment.
The ASP, the ruling body of professional surfing, have given an October 31st 2004 deadline to confirm the sponsors for the event. Priority is now given to secure the financial support needed for the event to actually take to the water.
It would be great if New Zealand based companies, ESPECIALLY THOSE that have an international presence, could CONSIDER COMING aboard ahead of international companies. We have a great story to tell and with TV time assured to the world at large, THIS EVENT IS an opportunity for KIWI CULTURE AND CORPORATES to sell our story.
I will keep you informed with developments as they unfold. In the meantime, anyone with ideas or sponsorship leads should make contact.
Regards,

2004 Central Coast Longboard Open |
|
The Committee of the Central Coast Malibu Boardriders Club has advised us that the Central Coast Longboard Open will once again be held this year.
The contest has been successfully held for 20 years and attracts in the vicinity of 160 entries from throughout New South Wales and Queensland. It is regarded as major event on the NSW Longboard contest calendar. This year’s contest will be held on the weekend of 13-14 November 2004.
The contest is usually held at Avoca Beach and attracts a significant spectator crowd and excellent local press, radio and TV coverage. The contest has traditionally benefited from a very high standard of surfing but has retained a great level of sportsmanship.
If you are interested in competing in the event you can download an entry form from the Central Coast Malibu Club's web site. If you are interested in seeing some of our top longboarders in action and having a great weekend amongst a friendly bunch of people who enjoy a laugh then take your family to Avoca beach on the 13th and 14th November. Just look along the beach for the collection of tents and long boards on the sand. You can't miss them.

Now Sol Socks™ are available in surf and outdoor shops from Florida to California to Alaska. Be proud that you are the first on your block to own a pair of Sol Socks™. |
Since we first set up shop in 2002, other companies, both large and small, have made and marketed their own thong socks. Thong socks are even featured in the April, 2004 edition of Cargo Magazine. But no one else can offer the unparalleled comfort of fleece for your feet and flip-flops. Talk about luxury!
We love hearing from people all over the world about how wonderful Sol Socks™ are. Deborah Tinker was born Sydney 1958 along with an identical twin sister Catherine Tinker (now Jacoby) who is also an established artist in Australia winning awards. Deborah started her art career in1976 as a Graphic Designer after studying at The School of Visual Arts in Crown St Sydney and typography at Sydney Technical College. Recognising the benefits of being taught traditionally as well as later, digitally. Deborah's designs are unique, always placing her heart and soul into whatever she is creating .
A holiday in Bali in 1978 and watching Jerry Lopez surfing solo at Ulu was when a cultural realization took over and led Deborah to a move out of the city and up the coast to Boomerang Beach near Forster. Asked to design surfboard shaper Bob Brown's logo(still in use today) upon arrival at a local printer led to a second job spraying surfboards for Bob around 1979 or 1980.
|
|
A couple of kids later and with part time work spraying surfboards not viable enough, Deborah thought to design a sturdy surfboard table with stainless steel legs for her airbrushed designs. Upon asking Bob McTavish to shape the Bluebird model for a table he was excited with the venture and her first order came from a large Corporate company in Sydney. Complete with logo on it as we see it on this web site today and another in the McTavish showroom Byron Bay.
Deborah continues to work and surf happily. Lessons from Rusty Miller all those years ago proved well, eventually letting Deborah make it to the NSW State Titles in 2002.-Hoping she'll make it a little further now in the comps with her new McTavish nose rider, Deborah would like to thank all those in the surfboard industry who have supported and believed in her. Most of all to her family who without the genetic traces of creativity and the energetic Tinker spirit and the influence of all that shiny metal on their 1957 Chevrolet family car her life may have taken a different path. Deborah is a member of the All Girls Surf Riders Club Lennox Head and Byron Bay Malibu Club. |
