The Old Mal Whalebone Classic 2004

The 2004 Whalebone Classic held at Iso's and was the best yet with mother nature turning it on for the two day and three night event.

A small swell greeted us early Saturday continued to build throughout the competition. By the Sunday finals there were head high sets rolling through.

Congratulations to the Cottesloe Cooking Team who fed and watered the huge crowd assembled.

Queensland's Jackson Close beat Erin Nicholls (2nd) Rahn Goddard (3rd) and Tim Fitzpatrick (4th) to claim the Pro Am.

(Thanks to Serena Kirby for the pics)

There is a new DVD out that we thought you might be interested in. (ED)

"Second Thoughts" makes it clear that Turner and friends' approach to travel is simple: Go hard. They take the typical Indo risk/reward calculus and multiply it exponentially. "Second Thoughts" is the type of hardcore project  that makes a show like "Survivor" look ridiculous and silly by comparison.

The water photography in the film is revolutionary. Somehow Turner, Potter and Schwartz were able take off on the  grinding waves while holding video cameras in their hands. They then shot footage inside lightning fast barrels and were doing insane whip pans - filming the foam ball behind them and then rapidly twisting forward to catch the lip as it cascaded over their heads.

The barrels they shot from inside were so long that the typical slow-mo camera board shot was utterly unnecessary.  Instead of the usual boring sequence where the action is slowed down that it takes forever for the lip to throw  over, we watch from the perspective of the rider as he rifles through section after section, barely missing exposed coral heads on the terrifyingly shallow end section, in real time.

If you want to show people who don't surf what it's like to get really tubed, show them this film.

Fire & Surf Boardriders - 2004 September 11 Memorial Surf Classic

The South Eastern Regional Fire Fighters run and partake in monthly inter-station surfing competition covering participants from Coolangatta to Noosa, with some firies even making the journey from as far north as Bundaberg. The Fire & Surf Boardriders Club has been active since January 1999, now boasting 34 members, most of who compete each month. Membership is open to all Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Employees competing in Short and Long Board categories.

In our initial years of the club, our main purpose was to aid camaraderie and sanctuary to the Fire Fighters in a social atmosphere. We started with a small bunch of blokes who have become more and more competitive in a fun way. The numbers have increased dramatically each month, which is fantastic. In many ways, our club seems to post a sense of counseling to our off duty Fire Fighter members.

September 11, 2001, the world witnessed a horrific act of terrorism when the World Trade Centre in New York City was attacked. Many lives were lost by both civilians and emergency service personnel who were simply carrying out their duties.

In a mark of respect to our fallen brothers the Fire & Surf Boardriders held a 911 Memorial surfing competition last year and attracted 60 participants from all emergency service sectors of Australia. During that day several raffles and donations were made by the competitors and general public in which proceeds were passed on to the Children’s Hospital Burns Unit.

This year, our low profile competition has become amazingly special. The attraction of interstate and international emergency service visitors has made this event something that all our colleagues worldwide will look forward to. And with the help of outside sponsorships and Local Television and Radio support, the base has been formed for a worldwide recognised memorial event.
