They say necessity is the mother of invention…so tired of lugging our 9 foot surfboards from the car to the beach, the Burley Board Sling was born. We wanted to give our arms a rest and just make it easier to maneuver our boards to the water. We started out hand sewing a couple in our kitchen, just for us. They worked great! After showing the sling to a few friends (who couldn’t wait to get their hands on one as well) we realized that other surfers out there might be in the same boat we were. So here it is…The Burley Board Sling, a surfboard carrier that goes in the water with you. (Rusty)
No leaving stuff on the sand, wondering if it will be there when your session is done. The Burley Board Sling is a self contained unit. The sling rolls up into it’s own quick dry pouch and slides right onto your leash ankle strap. It’s so small and light, it won’t interfere with your fancy foot work. You’ll hardly know it’s there.
The Burley Board Sling is made of nylon webbing with a heavy duty clip. It is approximately 3 1/2 “ by 4 1/2” and 1 1/2” deep. It fits boards up to 24” wide. With super low maintenance, just rinse it out after each use and hang dry. So get on board and Sling It….Don’t Ding It!! Santa Monica Surf Case |
We came across this great invention for carrying boards on those airlines that really don't give a damn about your $1,500 new custom made board that is your favourite performer or those other boards in your quiver. A Santa Monica Surf Case should make it really hard for them to stuff up your trip.
They are made in Santa Monica they have a good range of models and are not too expensive. They quote an 11 foot case at US$289 and a 6' 7" case at US$209.

From their web site: "Our cases are lightweight and incredibly tough. The hard grey shell is lined with 3/8" foam blocks. We use the highest quality hardware with wheels in the tail, a front pull handle and shoulder strap with brass/bronze clips."

For more info visit their web site at www.surfcase.com. You can even order them from their web site.
Adrian the Goofy Footer |
From Louis, a surf guide with www.dawnpatrol.co.za
Roger’s son Adrian is a lucky lad. Since starting surfing a couple of years ago, this 13 year old has surfed countless breaks with the chaps from Dawn Patrol. (Roger is one of the guides and owners of Dawn Patrol)
Mostly the right points stacked one after another along our coast within 30 min drive from our homes in East London, South Africa. But also the grinding river mouth break at a nearby town which I won’t name, and J-Bay of course!

Adrian gets around. When he’s not at school, he’s out with me, his dad, or one of the other surf guides. Because we only surf the best on offer, Adrian gets to surf cooking right points, left and right bowling beach breaks and reefs.

As a result he has an unfair advantage over his friends who invariably have to be content with surfing a local beach break in town, when they can convince mommy to give them a lift!
Because he surfs only the best, his style is distinctively “big-wave”. Drawn out bottom turns and long roundhouse cutbacks are the major components of his repertoire, although he is also starting to turn under the lip and float on sections.

This is a good kid, who suffers our grumbling about this and that with a brave face. No complaints from him either when he is asked to carry boards, hang wetsuits, and guide visiting guests in safely to dry land if they choose to rest their surfed-out arms, halfway through his surf session.

Adrian is stoked! When we hesitate, he asks why we are not all paddling out “because there are waves”. His enthusiasm is contagious, and as a result we have him to thank for many great sessions, which might not have been, had it not been for his urging.
Adrian is in training. Who knows, maybe sooner than later, Dawn Patrol will be his!
Louis and Roger run Dawn Patrol, a surf tour operator based in East London on South Africa’s south east coast. They and their support team move up and down the coast, surfing the best waves on offer between Jeffrey’s Bay and the Kwa-Zulu Natal South Coast. Check out their site on www.dawnpatrol.co.za
