Our West Australian Adventure

Ben, my son, and I decided late last year to go on a surfing trip from South Australia to Western Australia (WA) in January 2004. We left on January 5th (the day after my daughter, Millie, 19th birthday). We traveled by road in my Rav 4 for almost 7,000 km and arrived home on the 23rd January in time for my sister's birthday.

We traveled across the Nullabor Plain and experienced the vastness of our great land.

We saw that our native Wedge Tail Eagle is alive and well and living off the fresh road kill of our Nullabor Plain.

We saw sights that took our breath away like the Great Australian Bight where you can stop by the road side and see whales and their young (during whale season) in the deep water 100 ft below. Antarctica to the left and Desert to the right.

We picnicked on seafood and fine West Australian wines on a friend Roger's cabin cruiser in a sheltered bay and watched the sun set over the Swan River in Perth. Ahhh... Serenity!

We surfed at famous Yalingup Reef near Margaret River on the south-western coast of WA. Ben walked along the beach mesmerised by the beautiful young girls that were just everywhere.

We watched the locals tackle Margaret River Main Break at 6 to 8 feet (a small day) and carve up the deep ocean swell breaking over the coastal reefs.

We visited Walpole, down south near Albany, and walked amongst 400 plus year old trees that reach over 40 metres (140 feet) towards the sky. Wow! (notice Ben at the foot of the tree). Too big to fit in to one photo.

We visited the rugged southern coast around Esperance and even had a hairy surf whilst trying to navigate the rips, currents and powerful, deep ocean swells. Stunning, grand scenery.

We even called in to the infamous Cactus Beach in the Great Australian Bight and caught a long boarder on a long left hander. It was a difficult day to catch a wave with strong on shore winds and not much swell but he waited and picked a beauty.

We could not go past the beautiful sand dunes that back on to Cactus Beach and are surrounded by salt lakes. The few clouds cast an soft, mottled shadow across the dunes.

Sunshine Surfing in Manly changes hands

Kingsley Looker has finally sold Sunshine Surfing after more than ten years in the business.

The new owner, Helen O'Toole, and her staff have created a fresh new look and renewed energy to the shop. I will let Helen tell you all about the changes.

"In longboards we have the Sunshine mini mals, Freeline mini mals and hybrids and the O’Donnell malibus.

We have continued the emphasis on quality short boards and stock Localmotion, DHD, Nev and Pipedreams. We also buy, sell and trade second hand surfboards.

We have introduced the “Squid” surfboard to Manly. The Squid is a high performance flextail surfboard. The tail is made of unidirectional Carbon Fibre which creates a variable rocker in the tail. We have a demo model which you can “try before you buy”. (A well-known surfing professional has recently put the board to the test. Come into the shop to find out what he thinks about the Squid).

Our wetsuit range includes Xcel, Ripcurl, Peak and Aleeda. We also have a new range of wettie shorts and pants for children, ladies and men made by IC Kool in Narrabeen. These are ideal for surfing, sailing and windsurfing.

After some staff testing we now stock Speedfins as well as FCS fins. Other accessories include Ocean and Earth, FCS travel covers, leg ropes and roof racks etc.

In the surf wear department, we are increasing clothing range with Palmers and Rip curl T-shirts, board shorts and Brazilian bikinis.

We invite you to visit the shop and check us out. Mention this story and get a discount of 10% off (excludes sale items and package deals)." Helen O'Toole.

Do yourself a favour and check them out. You just never know what you might find.

Check out the latest edition of Pacific Longboarder for a very informative full page article on the club. It has a photo of Tokuji Masuda hanging five at Teahupo'o on the cover. Wow!
