Gumby hits the Daily Newspapers

Well the newspapers are starting to catch on about our great little invention. Recently the Manly Daily ran a feature article on Gumby Lock. Within a week a major Sydney daily newspaper also took up the story. The articles created a lot of interest amongst surfers on the Northern beaches of Sydney.

The following is from the Manly Daily, printed on Wednesday October 15th 2003. (You can click on the image for a larger size)

Then ten days later (Saturday October 25th 2003) the Daily Telegraph, a one of the two Sydney daily newspapers, printed this article in their H2O section.

We were chuffed!

The NEW Blue Gumby Lock passes the Pritts test with flying colours

We recently received the following email from a concerned Gumby Lock fan in the USA who wasn't convinced about the strength of the new Blue Gumby Fin Box Lock .....

The first Gumby Fin Box Lock I bought was metal and I loved it so much, I bought a second one from your US retailer, WetSand.com.The second one I just got is a blue plastic version and I'm a little worried that it's not as strong as the metal one. It just seems that if someone wanted to, they could twist the lock and break the new blue plastic version.
From Rich Pritts, USA.

We replied with the following and sent Rich a sample Fin Box Lock assembly to try out for himself.

Hi there Rich,
Thank you for your enquiry and for "Protecting your Stick" with a Gumby Lock.

We understand you concern regarding the strength of the new Gumby Lock but you do not have to worry about the new blue plastic Gumby Lock. We put a lot of effort, time and money in to researching the compounds for the lock. We worked with the biggest manufacturer of leash plugs and plastic mouldings in Australia to find the right compound.

It will take a lot to break one of our new locks. We have twisted it over 90 degrees in testing without breaking.
Our aims in researching the new lock were to eliminate corrosion, maintain strength, increase the flexibility and reduce its profile.

We would appreciate your address so that we can send you a spare Fin Box Lock assembly for you to test for yourself. We would be interested to hear your results if you could take the time to email us.

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Rich Pritts wrote back

Aloha again Mr. Kirby,
A little while back you sent me a spare fin box lock to test its durability. I was concerned that the blue plastic version would be too easy for a thief to break when compared to the metal versions you previously sold. Well my friends and I had a lot of fun testing, twisting, and banging on the blue plastic and I must say we were impressed. We are convinced that the surfboard fin box would break before your fin box lock.

Thanks for letting us test your lock.
