A huge win for Ningaloo ReefYou may have already heard the great news that the marina resort proposed for Ningaloo Reef has been stopped. It is a win for the coral reef and the multitudes of species that live there. It is also a win for sustainability and for people power – many tens of thousands of individuals such as you from all over the world taking a stand. What not so long ago seemed impossible is now a result that we can all feel proud of. Surrounded by an ecstatic group of Ningaloo locals, Western Australia’s Premier, Dr Geoff Gallop, announced on 4 July that: "Today, we have drawn a line in the sand and declared that we will not accept developments that threaten this precious and fragile coast." Congratulations to everybody for helping to achieve this outcome. The decision means that saving one of the world’s last great wild places is now a big step closer. With your help we’ll be able to make the most of this rare opportunity. As you know, the campaign was not just about stopping the marina proposal but also about making sure that future development is guided by the right processes. We will need your continued support to make sure we do not face other inappropriate proposals in the future. Good planning will help to provide solid foundations for businesses that offer experiences for visitors with different interests and budgets, without threatening the fragile environment. Western Australia will then be poised to become a leader in the management of tourism in fragile ecosystems. As part of its promise to respond to the tourism pressures of the region, the Government has released: "Future Directions: Sustainable Tourism and Land Use Scenarios for the Carnarvon-Ningaloo Coast." It is envisaged that some areas will remain in a wild state while others will be suitable for low-impact accommodation, all with a watchful eye on the wilderness values of the whole region. Bigger resorts and heavier infrastructure will be concentrated at Exmouth and Carnarvon. What do you think about development at Ningaloo? If you are interested in the detail of the regional planning, visit www.ningaloocoast.wa.gov.au. For a hard copy, ring 1800 626 477 or email carnarvon-ningaloo@dpi.wa.gov.au. We will send you a further update on the process. Meanwhile, thank you for your contribution to the campaign’s success and please continue to support our efforts to save Ningaloo, not just from a marina resort, but for all time. The award will be formally handed over during a well publicised formal award ceremony some time in September and will coincide with an international business expo.
