Cottesloe Longboard Club

Picture this, a bunch of guys meeting down the beach every weekend or whenever there was surf and talking about boards, surf or whatever and finally came the talk of starting a Longboard club. The foundations of the Cottesloe Longboard Club were laid at a gathering of 40 local surfers at the 'Isolated Reef' break on the last Sunday of September 1998. The beach meeting was a great success and a further talk of a meeting was to be held in November.

Well, it happened and on 8 November 1998 the first ever meeting of the newly formed Cottesloe Longboard Club was held. The club’s first year membership was 60 and grows every year, 2003 saw a membership total of 100. The first ever Christmas Party had a turnout of 80 members including family.

The first committee consisted of:

President – Peter Dunn (he was President for 3 years)
Vice President – Warren Thompson (Warren Thompson Surfboards)
Secretary – Arch Kaminickas
Treasurer – Jeff Shields
Social Rep – Toby Petley
Senior Rep – Les Morgan
Junior Rep – Jock Bahen
Wahines Rep – Mandy Yip
Gear Steward – Tim Bahen

The birth of the club proved to be an instant hit with local longboarders and was one of the most popular longboard clubs by the end of the first year. The club had great support with local sponsors, and to this day we still have 80% of those first year sponsors still sponsoring the club. It just goes to show what a great club we have.

The club has committee meetings first Wednesday of each month (at the Cottesloe Surf Club) with a social BBQ first Wednesday of every month (also held at the Surf Club) and a Fun Day is held on the last Sunday of every month at Iso's.

The Club’s motto should have been “The family that surfs together, stays together”; because that is what our club is all about.

We encourage family atmosphere and welcome all family members to participate in our club rounds, with the youngest being 7 years and oldest surfer Over 55. Interested in joining our club, then contact our Membership Rep Colin Arkwright. Club meetings are held at the Cottesloe Surf Club Club meetings are held at the Cottesloe Surf Club as are the club BBQ's, fun days are held usually last sunday on each month at Iso's.

The Mollymook Longboard Charity Classic - 23 & 24 August 2003

The Mollymook Longboarders Inc has just been formed and they have taken on the running of the Longboard Charity Classic. Unfortunately the previous organisers were unable to run it this year.

It should be a great weekend with lots of hot surfers coming from all around. You can download the entry form for the contest and pass it on to your friends. Come for the weekend and bring your family.

If you have any questions you should contact Michael Greentree on Ph/Fax 02 44565019 or mail him at PO Box 256, MILTON NSW 2538

Congratulations guys. We hope it is a great success.

Mollymook is a small fishing and holiday town about 3 hours from Sydney on the south coast of new South Wales. It has long white sand beaches with lots of excellent surfing spots. A really great spot to visit and is relatively un crowded, surf wise. (Ed)

Mal and the Longboarders

As the name might suggest, Mal & the Longboarders are a dinky-dye surf band. Yep, all that groovy stuff from the sixties that evolved from the emerging surf culture of that period.

It was exciting times and the music of that era reflected the feeling - a new age, new values, and a great new popular sport - surfing! The bands of the day were The Shadows, The Ventures, Beach Boys, The Chantays, Jan & Dean - and so the list goes on.

Hey, but not everyone actually surfed, nor did every surfer necessarily listen only to surf songs - the whole scene encompassed rhythm & blues as the foundation for not only surf music, but also most other popular music of that period - and so it is reflected in the full repertoire of Mal & the Longboarders - surf & 60’s music.

Well, Australia's premier longboard surfing band have recently updated their site with more info about the band, plus new merchandise.

Till the end of June we have a special on CD's - buy all 3 Titles for $40 + $10 (Postage & Handling in Australia)

You can hear sample tracks at our site www.malandthelongboarders.com. Stay tuned for more adventures from Mal and the Longboarders.

Miller Metal.

(Mal and the Longboarders are one of the 'stayers' in the surfing music business and continue their tradition of riding for the long term. ed)
