The Latest Innovations

During the past couple of weeks we have come across several new surf related innovations. We have not tried the products and are not recommending them. We thought they would be of interest to others in the surf industry.

Switch Blade Fins

This is NOT a “Flexible” Fin. SwitchBlade fins are RIGID control surfaces that improve surfboard, and surfer, performance. A complete analysis of the forces and dynamics of how a fin influences surfboard performance can be very complicated.

The SWITCHBLADE fin technology breaks traditional barriers by introducing a mechanical advantage for the surfer to establish a turn, or “bank angle,” with less force. The SWITCHBLADE provides ideal fin performance by allowing less resistance to rolling the board onto the rails.

At the same time, the SWITCHBLADE fin locks into a position that provides more surface area to counter act the force of a turn. Therefore, a smaller SWITCHBLADE fin does the same work as a larger conventional fin.

Turning from Rail to Rail
Pivoting action of fin reduces resistance to turning. Allows board to snap from one rail to the other.

Cranking Steep Turns
Increased turning power due to more fin surface area projected into the water.

On Face of Wave
Conventional fins can slip-out when tracking down the line. SWITCHBLADE fins kick into the wave for more traction.

4 Way Fin Systems

As a surfer you instinctively know that sometimes subtle refinements to your equipment can produce remarkable effects on your performance.

Have you ever wanted more performance from your surfboard and felt there were still many questions which remained unanswered? Well, the search is finally over! At last a fin-system that pushes your surfboard to the cutting edge of your ability.

The 4wayfinsystem (4wfs) is a multipurpose fin system that allows surfers to not only remove their fins for traveling/replacement purposes but also allows for further simultaneous adjustments to three critical area's of fin functionality, comprising:

  • toe-in and out angle
  • splay angle
  • horizontal adjustment

Each fin assembly consists of 3 core elements:

  • the fin itself,
  • three pre-angled circular discs and
  • a box which is firmly secured within the board.

All 4wfs fins are precision manufactured from a super strong, resilient and lightweight compound that eliminates the excessive flex found in so many of today's fins. Light weight/reduced flex/extreme Responsiveness = Superior Performance.

Each fin fits snugly into an interchangeable circular disc, with each disc capable of rotating up to 4 degrees in either direction within the box secured in the board. For example the following combination, all achieved with the same fin, increases the surfboard’s manoeuvrability and responsiveness:

  • The fins are moved vertically up towards the nose.
  • The fins are “toe’ed in” towards the nose of the board.
  • The angle of outward fin splay is increased.

Surf Air Strap

It's all about having fun. To have a grip on your board will allow you to make new moves, like tail grabs, fackies, and flips.

Straps are already being used in so many sports and they have pushed us into a new way of thinking.

The Surf Air Strap is a 2" suction cup that goes in the arch of your front foot. It has about 15 to 20 Lbs of suction, yet will pivot and slide. You need about a 3" circle with a thin coat of wax were you place your foot. When not in use just strap it around your ankle.

Bill FitzHugh, our UK Distributor, reports that this product is patented.

Extreme Surf Strap

Free-style Surf straps consists of a suction cup that is attached to a strap, which is worn around a surfer's front foot. The contraption assists surfers in performing aerial manoeuvres, cutbacks and floaters by temporarily affixing the foot to the surfboard.

The suction cup attaches to the surfboard when the rider stands up. Because the cup is wet and the board is covered by a thin layer of wax, it is easily moved and releases without a large amount of force, which allows surfers to take-off normally and move their front foot as they usually would.

Freestyle Surf straps is manufactured by HURST GEAR in Malibu, California.
