Day
2 of the Inaugural ISA / Fosters World Masters Surf Titles
The 1st of the Autumn swells kicked in for the start if day 2 and all
3 arenas boasted large waves to test the 300 surfers from around the world.
The pick of the arenas was Stent Road where the 35-39 and the 40-44 Age
Divisions experienced 9-wave sets at 3x overhead drops. The site continued
to fire all day.
The
other arenas, Graveyards for the 45-49's and Puniho Road fro the 50-54
and 55-59 had large shifty conditions that were affected at times by the
light side-shore winds. The swell is still around for the start of Day
3 and look set to continue for the remainder of the event. The 3-metre
swell and offshore winds are predicted up until the finals on Sunday.
Last night the Oakura Board riders Club set the unofficial
world record of 146 surfboards on a car, in light-hearted relief after
a long hard day at the beach.

Saturday
19th April
The semi-finalists were decided in 2 arenas on the town beaches yesterday.
Solid, well-overhead sets poured through all day to allow the competitors
some light relief from the pounding of the large conditions of the previous
day.
The semi-finals day will be surfed on the beach breaks of Fitzroy outside
the New Plymouth Surf riders Clubhouse. A dreary start to the day with
persistent drizzle. But a cool Southerly offshore is giving good conditions
to the shoulder high peaks on the beach.
There was a sad tinge to the event with a couple of "local"
surfers wishing to protest "their" spot being chosen as a venue
and remained in the water at Stent Road causing disruptions in the classic
conditions. One local, Pat Hickey pressed home his point by taking off
inside a competitor and colliding in the double overhead peeling right-hander.
The result was that Jacki Conti was speared in the thigh and taken to
hospital and out of the competition. Hickey finally came ashore to rounds
of abuse and a scuffle in the car-park followed. Fortunately nothing
too
serious resulted.
Another recent resident and former NZ Women's Champ, Heather
Dent was also involved in failing to clear the water and dropped in on
a number of competitors. The other couple of surfers gave the competitors
the right of way and stayed well clear of any incidents. It was a sad
day that the minority faction could not see fit to give the event the
respect it deserved and chose to enjoy their sport at more convivial locations
- of which their were plenty. But with this single incident behind us,
the event is rolling along as per plan.
Those to progress are:

Otago.
The finals will be held tomorrow at the best location on Surf Hwy 45.
Favourable conditions are set to continue.

Sunday
20th April
All finalists were decided yesterday on the beach breaks
at Fitzroy- Headquarters of the New Plymouth Surf riders Club. A dying
swell and a change of swell direction made wave selection critical. Still
there were head-high peeling waves held up by the off-shore winds.
The finals will be decided at the same site. The Northerly
swell has established itself as the dominant swell which will mean small
wave/ high performance surfing will determine the 1st World Masters Surf
Champions. Winds are expected to stay off-shore all day and the waves
around waist to shoulder high. The New Plymouth Surf riders Club see it
fitting that the Champions will be decided on their 'front lawn' amongst
the great vibes that have existed all weekend. Winners will be announced
tonight at the Awards Ceremony.
