Long Grom Surfing Competition, Lancelin 2002

On Saturday 26th October, at Lancelin Back Beach, the Mullaloo Longboard Club hosted the State’s first all junior longboard surfing competition. 68 Junior Competitors from all over the State were treated to their own longboard surfing competition in near perfect conditions.

Junior girls and boys competed in the under 18 and under 14 novice and experienced divisions riding 9ft and 8ft longboards respectively. To assist the competitors Mullaloo Longboard Members supplied their own personal boards for the novice surfers to use on the day.

The Mullaloo Longboard Club has the largest junior membership of all the longboard clubs in Western Australia and therefore saw the need for such a competition. It was a real treat as many of the young girls and boys had never surfed longboards never alone entered a surfing competition before.

“The positive response from the juniors and parents after the event made it all worth while” said club President Ray Robinson. “While the competition was well received and supported by the local residents of Lancelin it would have been difficult to run without the sponsors generous support.

For their $20 entry fee all contestants were given a quality ‘T’ shirt, 2 heats to surf in, a sausage sizzle & drink and a free giveaway on the day.” said club Competition Director Greg Foster.

Attending on the day to oversee the proceedings were the following;
Mr Norm Bateman - President Surfing WA
Mr Garry Vaughan - National Longboard Rep Surfing Australia
Mr Mick Marlin State - Longboard Rep Surfing WA
Mr Martin Widdle - Sales Representative 92.9 PMFM

The breakdown of contestants were –
1/3 Girls & 2/3 Boys. 50% of contestants were Longboard Club Members & the other 50% were non-longboard riders ie; first timers, short board or boogie board riders.
